In 1997, the National Football League recognized him as the best head coach in the league, and they gave him an award for it. Fassel was the head coach of the Giants when they triumphed in the National Football Conference Championship game in the year 2000.

In 2003, he parted ways with the New York Giants and began working as an offensive consultant for the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, he had been with the Giants.

On October 17, 2006, he was relieved of his responsibilities with the Baltimore Ravens at the same time that he was dismissed from his position as offensive coordinator for the team.
