Nicole Richie recalls Paris Hilton rift that caused them to stop speaking
That was not hot.
Nicole Richie is reflecting on the time she famously feuded with BFF Paris Hilton in the public eye.
In a new interview with People, published Friday, the “Simple Life” alum admitted that the falling out wasn’t one of her “best moments.” However, she confirmed things are much better with Hilton today.
“Paris and I have more of a sisterhood than I would say, a standard friendship,” she explained. “We’ve been in each other’s lives for as long as I can remember, since we were 2. So this is just, it’s life.”
Richie and Hilton, both 43, stopped being friends at one point while filming “The Simple Life” together in 2005. The two are working together again on a new Peacock series called “Paris & Nicole: The Encore.”
“I just feel so lucky just to have a lifelong friendship like we have — a friendship that’s longer than most marriages,” Hilton said of Richie in her interview with People.
“I’m just so proud of how much we’ve grown and just all the experiences that we’ve been through in life. It made us these really incredibly strong, resilient and amazing women, and I’m really proud of us.”
Their comments come shortly after they both got vulnerable about their 2005 feud during a joint sit-down on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast with host Alex Cooper.
“Back then, the media was just so toxic and they loved starting feuds between people because, obviously, that sold tabloids,” Hilton claimed.
“So it was mostly the media just spinning things and creating drama that didn’t exist, which was normal in the 2000s. They did it with everyone.”
Meanwhile, Richie alleged “nothing really happened” between them — but confirmed they didn’t have the tools to communicate to clear up the hearsay at the time.
She also said she felt “sad to think about” their fight but claimed it helped her learn how to more effectively communicate.
“The Simple Life” premiered in 2003 and followed the young socialites working physically exerting and mentally draining jobs.
Three seasons into the boundary-pushing reality series, the “Paris in Love” star ignited feud rumors when she stated that she hoped Rod Stewart’s daughter, Kimberly Stewart, would replace Richie.
“Kim is hysterical and crazy fun, and I love that about her,” she said at the time. “Nicole and I have been best friends since we were babies, and I love her, but I want to do what’s best for the show.”
Just days later, she confirmed that she and Nicole were “no longer friends.” Showing how serious their feud was, they filmed season 4 of “The Simple Life” separately.
A source at the time said the “Candidly Nicole” star was jealous of Hilton, while another claimed she had simply outgrown her.
The pair eventually mended their strained relationship in September 2006 when Hilton contacted Richie for her 25th birthday.
