Criticism mounts against Taylor Swift for lyrics yearning for life in the ‘1830s’ on latest ‘TTPD’ release

Taylor Swift is no stranger to controversy, and her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” has sparked backlash over a particular lyric. On the track “I Hate It Here,” Swift sings about wishing to live in the 1830s “but without all the racists.” This line did not sit well with many fans, who were quick to point out that slavery was still legalized in America during the 1830s.

Social media erupted with criticism, with one user tweeting, “There is no way Taylor Swift said she’d like to live in an era where Chattel Slavery was the law of the land and say ‘but without the racists.’ Like it was some casual microaggressions or something. Is this what we’re doing??” Another user added, “pretty astonishing to stipulate that she wants to live in the 1830s, ‘except without the racists,’ and not mention slavery, so slavery still exists but everyone’s chill about it.”

The backlash continued as more fans expressed their disappointment in Swift’s choice of time period. One fan questioned, “I know I can’t stfu abt Taylor Swift but of all time periods WHY THE 1830s??? The most notable event from the time period is the trail of tears like I cannot wrap my head around it? Is this another one of her dumbass codes?” Another user remarked, “Taylor Swift wanting to go back to the 1830s surprised no Black person anywhere.”

As the controversy grew, Page Six reached out to Swift’s representative for comment but did not receive an immediate response. However, this is not the only contentious aspect of the album. In another song titled “thanK you aIMee,” Swift appears to take a jab at Kim Kardashian, with lyrics referencing a “bronze, spray-tanned” bully whom her mom “wish[es] were dead.”

The feud between Swift and Kardashian dates back to 2016, and it seems to be ongoing based on the latest release. Despite this, Kardashian has not publicly responded to the song. Additionally, Swift references her past relationships with Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy on the album, as well as her current beau Travis Kelce.

Overall, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” is stirring up emotions and conversations among fans and critics alike. While Swift’s intention behind the controversial lyric about the 1830s may be up for interpretation, it’s clear that her music continues to spark debate and intrigue. Only time will tell how this latest controversy will impact Swift’s career and public image.
