Alan Ritchson, star of ‘Reacher,’ reflects on suicide attempt following sexual assaults

Alan Ritchson, known for his roles in popular series such as “Blue Mountain State,” “Smallville,” and “Black Mirror,” recently opened up about his struggles with mental health and the trauma of being a victim of multiple sexual assaults. In a candid interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ritchson revealed a dark moment in his life where he attempted suicide by hanging himself in the attic of his home.

The actor recalled the harrowing experience of dangling from a green extension cord, ready to let go until a vision of his three young sons appeared before him. In that moment, his sons, Calem, Edan, and Amory, in their mid-30s, calmly requested him not to go through with the act and expressed their desire for him to be alive and present in their lives. This powerful vision prompted Ritchson to summon the strength to pull himself up and ultimately save his own life.

This suicide attempt was not an isolated incident for Ritchson, as it was a culmination of years of enduring sexual assaults and the subsequent emotional toll they took on him. The trauma from these experiences had a significant impact on his mental health, leading to a bipolar diagnosis at age 36 and an ADHD diagnosis at age 40.

Ritchson attributed his struggles to his time in the modeling industry, which he described as a breeding ground for exploitation and abuse. He recounted instances where he was subjected to horrific environments where sexual abuse was the norm, and the promise of a lucrative career opportunity often served as the bait for predators.

One particular incident with a notorious photographer left such a deep scar that Ritchson decided to quit the modeling world for good. The photographer lured him into a hotel room under the guise of a lucrative campaign opportunity only to sexually assault him, further adding to the trauma he had already endured.

Transitioning into the television and film industry did not shield Ritchson from further trauma, as he found himself in a business meeting that took a dark turn. A business partner threatened to destroy both his career and reputation by fabricating allegations of sexual assault if he did not comply with her demands. The emotional weight of this threat pushed Ritchson to the brink once again, and he contemplated suicide as a means of escape.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Ritchson has sought help and has been proactive in managing his mental health struggles. He regularly engages with a psychiatrist to navigate the complexities of bipolar disorder and ADHD. Additionally, he has found solace in more meaningful work that allows him to share his story and help others who may be facing similar issues.

Through his journey of healing and self-discovery, Ritchson has come to realize the importance of making a positive impact on the world and serving others. He believes that our purpose as human beings is to contribute to the betterment of society and support those in need. By sharing his story and shedding light on the dark corners of the entertainment industry, Ritchson hopes to inspire others to seek help and find the strength to overcome their own struggles.
