Three people are dead, two injured and one missing after a boat capsized and sank off Staten Island in New York on Sunday, Feb. 23, according to reports from multiple outlets including NBC News and Sky News.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a 911 call about a “vessel taking water” near Breezy Point in Queens at around 12:04 p.m. on Sunday, Feb, 23, according to a press release.
“Coast Guard watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and deployed three rescue boats from Coast Guard Station New York and Station Sandy Hook and an MH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City,” the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Five people were recovered at the scene with four “unresponsive,” according to the release.
The Coast Guard administered CPR to some of the victims before two people were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital and three were sent to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook and treated by medical teams.
Three people were initially reported to have died following the incident, per ABC 7 New York. They were pronounced dead in hospital, ABC News reported.
One of the two injured parties was also believed to be in critical condition, according to reports.
The U.S. Coast Guard said they were still looking for an additional person “in the water approximately five miles southeast of Breezy Point,” according to the release, and the New York Police Department, New York City Fire Department and New Jersey State Police are assisting the Coast Guard in their search operation.
The FNDY reported that six people fell in the water when the boat capsized, per NBC New York while CBS News is reporting that a fourth person has since died.
