Early childhood and Amateur Career

 

On January 24, 1957, Mark Eaton was born in the American city of Inglewood, which is situated in the state of California.  In order to get his education, he enrolled at Westminster High School. After that, he enrolled at the Arizona Automotive Institute, which ultimately led to his graduation as a service technician at the school.

Mark’s previous line of employment was as a mechanic for automobiles. In point of fact, he put in those three years working as an auto mechanic before being brought to the attention of Tom Lubin, the associate basketball coach at the school.

When Eaton was a player at the junior college level, he displayed an impressive level of skill. In addition to that, he guided his school to win the competition for the California State Title. Eaton could have gone into the draft, but he decided to play another year of collegiate basketball instead.

Mark’s final year of high school basketball consisted of just 42 total minutes played, during which he averaged 1.3 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Eaton had a difficult time being selected since relatively few NBA teams expressed interest in him after his performance at UCLA was the worst it had ever been. the Utah Jazz selected him to play with them.

After playing in a total of 81 games throughout his first season, he finished the year having blocked 275 shots. After averaging 3.4 blocks per contest, he even reached the third spot on the NBA’s rankings.

Mark’s play continued to improve throughout the second season, as seen by the 351 shots he blocked throughout 82 total games. His tenacious play on defense was also instrumental in the Jazz’s first-ever appearance in the playoffs. During the third season, Eaton blocked a total of 456 shots, making him virtually unstoppable.

After that, he was able to claim the title of holder of the record for the most shots blocked in a single season. In the 1988-89 NBA season, Eaton was once again recognized as the best defensive player in the league. Additionally, for the third time in his NBA career, he was recognized as an NBA All-Defensive First Team selection.

During his final several seasons with the Utah Jazz, he was sidelined by a number of knee and back issues. However, the injuries did not stop him from making an impact. Eaton was so injured that he was unable to play for the 1992–1993 season, and in the end, he decided to declare his retirement in September of 1994.
