After migrating to the U.s in 1990, he was victorious in a stakes race for the first time at Aqueduct Racetrack the following year. In 1995, he took first place in a Grade I stakes event for the first time. At Aqueduct in the year 1996, he won the riding championship for the first time. In 1998, he earned the first of five riding prizes that he would eventually win at Saratoga.
In the year 2001, on September 3rd, he broke the record for most wins in a single day at Saratoga with six victories. Running for president carried him to victory for the 3,000th time in the year 2004, which took place on July 29 in Saratoga. He bestowed upon the winner of the Breeders’ Cup the Bill Shoemaker Award.
He was awarded the Shoemaker Prize in both the year 2011 and the year 2014, respectively. In 2005, he was successful in surpassing the previous national earnings record, which had been established by Jerry Bailey in 2003. He was awarded the second annual Eclipse Prize.
