In San Dimas, California, on July 2, 1989, Alexandra Patricia Morgan was born. While growing up, Morgan was a multi-sport athlete but didn’t begin playing professional soccer when she was 14 years old. She graduated from Diamond Bar Junior High, where she was chosen as an NSCAA All-American and three times as a league all-star.
Morgan attended the University of California, Berkeley after high school, where she helped the Golden Bears reach the NCAA Tournament each of her 4 years (and to the second round twice). She contributed to the United States’ success at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2008 by scoring the game-winning goal against North Korea, which FIFA named the Goal of the Tournament and the second-best Goal of the Year. Morgan finished her collegiate career at Berkeley in the fall of 2010, tied for third on the school’s all-time scoring chart with 45 goals and third in points with 107.

Career
The Western New York Flash selected Morgan first overall in the 2011 Women’s Pro Soccer Draft. In the same year, she was on the U.S. women’s team in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was the team’s youngest player and scored her maiden World Cup goal against France in the semifinal, propelling the group to the championship (only to lose to Japan in a shootout).
Along with other members of the U.S. national team like Hope Solo, Sydney Leroux, Stephanie Cox, and Megan Rapinoe, Morgan joined the Seattle Sounders Women of the United Soccer Leagues W-League after the WPS league halted play at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Later, she joined the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns FC and subsequently the Orlando Pride.
Morgan was given a position on the American Olympic women’s soccer team in 2012. Morgan won her maiden Olympic medal, a gold one, with the American team at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. In a spiteful encounter seen by approximately 80,300 spectators.

Morgan and several of her colleagues filed a salary discrimination claim against U.S. Soccer in March 2016 asserting unfair pay disparities between players on the men’s and women’s national teams. The situation worsened in March 2019, when Morgan was one of 28 members of the women’s national team to launch a complaint alleging gender discrimination against U.S. Soccer.
